Finding Your Youthful Glow

Oh to be young again. The energetic optimism! The fast metabolism! The confident I-can-accomplish-anything-I-set-my-mind-to attitude!  Whilst most people would say they actually have no interest in being that age again, it would be nice to have the constant enthusiastic zest for life and the flawless complexion without having to try too hard.

There is nothing we can do to dodge our next birthday, but we can restore the natural glow of our 20s by recapturing these qualities (Of course, a fabulous facial, lipstick, and the right pair of jeans can't hurt, either).

So we’ve created these ten simple steps to help you turn back your internal clock and rediscover your youthful glow both inside and out.

Get your beauty sleep

Getting your zzz's is the easiest way to give you bags of energy and build a more vibrant body and brain. The only time your body can truly restore itself is when you're asleep and chances are, you're not getting as much as you need. The recommended amount is 8 hours 11 minutes a night (so just skip that episode of Game of Thrones and leave the dishes until the morning!). After six weeks you'll feel the difference - more energy, fewer dark circles, less need for touche éclat.

 A la smart menu

A balanced diet made up of a wide variety of colourful fruits and vegetables, lean proteins, low-fat dairy products, healthy monounsaturated fats, seeds and nuts, and whole grains is the way to go. The vitamins and antioxidants in fruits and veggies will make you feel refreshed, recharged, and re-energised. Aside from your daily intake of water to keep hydrated, naturopaths suggest starting your day with fresh lemon in water and drinking green tea throughout the day. And remember put.down.the.fizzy.drinks. Right now.

 Wear sunblock

Sunblock is still the most important and effective anti-ageing treatment of all. Always make sure yours is a broad spectrum sunscreen: one that protects against UVA (primarily ageing) and UVB (primarily burning and cancer-causing) rays. The price or the product aren’t even important, you just need to use one whenever you'll be spending extended periods outdoors, whatever the weather. UVA doesn't care if it's hot or cold outside!

Pamper perfect

A little pampering never did anyone any harm. At Lifehouse we have the as ESPA Lifestage Anti Ageing Facial. This facial incorporates special age-defining massage techniques and technology advanced LIFESTAGE products. This luxurious facial will minimise wrinkles, immediately improve hydration levels whilst helping to reduce the appearance of pigmentation, large pores and redness. A mask will also be applied to firm and stimulate elasticity leaving the skin revitalised and radiant.

 Step right up

Exercise is the miracle cure we’ve always had, there’s nothing new there. But aside from helping to protect against many health benefits, exercise also improves sleep quality end energy, reduces stress, depression and makes you feel alive. So whether it’s walking, swimming, yoga or dancing, regular exercise will give you a healthier happier outlook on life.

 Be (a bit) vain

Some people go to extreme lengths to fight ageing, and getting nipped and tucked is not the golden ticket to eternal youth. However don't underestimate the power of simply taking care of your looks. Prolonging the vitality of your skin, your hair, and your body will make you feel more confident and youthful. So go and treat yourself to that face cream and hair cut!

Drink Aloe Vera

Yes we did say drink. And yes that does seem bizarre since it’s normally used in creams and lotions. Drinking Aloe Vera is the hottest new trend as it replenishes your body naturally with a huge range of nutrients. It contains approximately 200 active components including - vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, B12, C, E, folic acid and Niacin. Many people take Aloe Vera to help with digestion but it is also taken for good immunity, cleansing and good skin.  It’s a great all rounder, jam packed full of nutrients so you’ll be glowing from head to toe.

Out of sight

Keep an eye on your vision. Dark green leaves are prime sources of both lutein and zeaxanthin (plant pigments that protect your eyes from UV damage). Make delicious romaine salads — and make sure spinach, kale, and Swiss chard are regularly on the menu, too.

Go back in time

Play your favourite music from your University days, go out dancing, lie in the sunshine and do something spontaneous, playful and unplanned. Remember to laugh. Laughing requires as many as 15 muscles to squeeze facial muscles into a smile. Now what does this mean? It simply means that laughing actually helps increase the blood flow around the face making you look and feel younger.

 Put on your positive pants

It's natural to be a little gloomier than when you were 21, since real life doesn’t exist until after your 21st birthday. So the final step to feeling younger is to radiate positivity. Why not look for something positive in each day, even if some days you need to look a little harder. Cultivating a greater sense of optimism will provide you with more positive energy to motivate you to do youthful things.

So there you have it. It’s an over used cliché but it’s true, you're only as old as you feel. While we can't do much about the years rolling on by, how we approach life every day can make a big difference.
