Summer is here; the time of year to get out the oversized shades and underused barbeques and enjoy some long-awaited sunshine. Whether you’re spending this holiday season lounging in your back garden, backpacking around Europe, or on an exotic adventure in South East Asia, we have some summer essentials for you to take with you.
This summer, focus on more than ‘the perfect bikini body’ or ‘the quickest way to tan’; enjoy yourself and embrace the elements, but be prepared for them!
Often the problem with achieving summer skin is simply our winter skin. Once we finally bring it out of hibernation, skin is dry and lifeless after a cold hard winter. But fear not, there is a solution! The best way to get your skin ready for summer is with regular exfoliation. Exfoliation removes dead, dulling skin debris to prevent congestion and allows fresh cells to be exposed, therefore improving the texture and appearance of your skin.
Apply exfoliator to your loofah or washcloth, and scrub into your skin, using gentle, circular motions. We highly reccommend the Ishga Sea Salt Scrub, created from pure Hebridean water and sea salt flakes. However if a DIY effort isn’t your thing, we offer an Ishga Salt and Oil Scrub treatment here at Lifehouse. Relax in the hands of our talented therapists as they apply the ishga Hebridean Sea Salt and Oil Scrub and sweep away dull, dry skin. It’s an invigorating express treatment to stimulate circulation, eliminate toxins and leave the skin nourished and glowing.

If you’re heading to the beach this summer, don’t let the thought of knotted hair cause hesitation at the seafront, jump on in! Salt water can be great for your skin and there are a number of products and hair treatments to reverse the straw-like beach head.
So for when Mother Nature really turns up the heat, don’t let your locks dry out; use a conditioning mask to retain the shine and volumize your hair. These can be purchased in supermarkets but they’re also easy to make at home:
An equal measure of both castor oil and coconut milk quell those ocean-induced split ends. Simply apply the mixture to damaged hair, leave for an hour, and rinse with warm water.
If frizzy hair is your summer nightmare, we have a simple recipe for a monthly rejuvenation. Blend ½ cup plain yoghurt, ½ cup honey, and the not-so-secret miracle ingredient, 1 teaspoon almond oil. Apply the mixture to damp hair and allow your locks to soak up the natural goodness for 20 minutes before shampooing as usual.

We’ve heard it all before but sunscreen really should be your number one summer essential.
As you’re soaking up the sun and edging closer to achieving that perfect natural tan, you may be doing substantial harm to your skin. Not only can visible light and infrared waves cause sunburn and aging of the skin, those glorious rays also contain harmful UVA and UVB radiation. This can culminate in chronic immune system, eye and skin damage. Whilst sunscreen will protect you from numerous hidden summertime dangers, covering up is also a good idea, so get out your floppy sunhats to complete that lazy summer look.
The right sunscreen for your skin type:
If your skin is oily and prone to break-outs, we suggest you opt for oil-free, noncomedogenic (prevents the clogging of pores) lotion.
For dry skin, a moisturising cream containing shea butter would be well suited, but also seek a product with avobenzone or octocrylene on the label. You should avoid sprays, as they tend to contain alcohol and exacerbate dry skin.
Fragrance-free, hypoallergenic lotions containing natural filters such as zinc oxide are ideal for sensitive skin. The majority of children’s sunscreens available are tailored to this skin-type.
Don’t forget your lips when venturing out into the August inferno! Seek out a soothing balm with a sun protection factor of 15 or above to avoid a cracked pout.
