Lifehouse is set within 130 acres of grounds, including 12 acres of listed gardens originally created by Lady Byng of Thorpe Hall almost 100 years ago.
Today, the gardens are being carefully restored by our Head Gardener and his team, with winding pathways, lakes and seasonal planting to explore throughout the year.

THE GARDENS
RESTORED WITH CARE AND CHARACTER
Walking through Thorpe Hall Gardens, you can still sense the care, vision and character that shaped the landscape almost a century ago. Today, the grounds continue to be carefully restored and managed, preserving the natural atmosphere of the historic wild gardens while allowing the planting to evolve throughout the seasons.
The approach to Lifehouse winds through natural Essex landscape, with meadow-style planting inspired by the travels of Lady Byng and the principles of traditional wild gardening. Across the estate, rare trees, returning orchids and historic plant varieties continue to thrive, including species connected to Thorpe Hall’s original gardens and Lady Byng herself.
Over the years, careful restoration and changes to planting and maintenance have allowed a number of rare and historic species to return to Thorpe Hall Gardens. Orchids once absent from the grounds have reappeared naturally, while rare trees such as the Californian Madrone continue to thrive within the landscape.
The gardening team also continues to trace and restore plant varieties connected to Lady Byng and the gardens’ history, including Siberian Irises, ‘Viscountess Byng’ flowers discovered overseas, and the striking Peony ‘Lady Byng’, which still blooms beside the Sunken Garden today.
The Seasons
Spring
Seasonal bulbs, woodland flowers and ornamental trees bring colour and fragrance throughout spring, from snowdrops and bluebells to irises, Judas trees and the Handkerchief Tree.
Summer
Lakeside planting, wildflower meadows and herbaceous borders bring texture and colour across the grounds.
Autumn
Autumn colour, ornamental trees and reflective lakes create a calm seasonal display, with grasses, seed heads and misty mornings adding atmosphere across the gardens.
Winter
Winter brings crisp silhouettes, colourful stems and mirror-like lakes, creating a peaceful backdrop for spotting birds and wildlife across the gardens.

PETER PAN WALK
A peaceful pathway connected to the literary history of Thorpe Hall and its former visitors.
WINSTON CHURCHILL SUMMERHOUSE
Overlooking the surrounding gardens and lakes, this secluded spot remains one of the quieter corners of the estate.
SUNKEN GARDEN
Seasonal planting and sheltered seating create a calm space to pause within the grounds.

Bluebell woods
A seasonal highlight at Lifehouse, from late March to early April our Bluebell woods bloom into a vibrant carpet of colour - perfect for a mindful stroll among birdsong and nature.
